CDM+ and OpenBase

So, what is this OpenBase?

CDM+ is comprised of two major components, the program and the data that you put into it. CDM+ 8.1 and all later versions, including CDM+ 8.1.2, fully implement a query language called SQL. All major database work in the business world is done through SQL.

From its inception in 1986 until we released version 8.1, the CDM+ database, where all of your information is stored, was in an Omnis© database structure called a “datafile.” Although the Omnis database supports SQL, it is not designed to be a true SQL server database. Late in 2004 we were able to work out a licensing agreement with OpenBase International, Ltd. to use their product to serve our database needs, allowing us to take full advantage of the SQL language.

True SQL Server Database

The focus of the upgrade from CDM+ Pro 8.0 to CDM+ 8.1 was to transition away from the Omnis datafile to a true SQL server database. Much of this means little to the end-user except that users upgrading from CDM+ Pro 8.0 or earlier to CDM+ 8.1.2 (the latest update to CDM+) will experience an increase in speed and functionality. New users will get the benefit of this speed and power right away.

Hardware Requirements

One important element in the move to OpenBase is that the computer on which the database is stored must have a Windows 2000 or more recent operating system (XP or Vista recommended) or, on the Macintosh, it must be running OS X 10.3.9 or higher (CDM+ 8.1.2 requires OS X 10.4 or higher). We recommend that client computers, too, have Windows XP or Vista or Mac OS X 10.3.9 (10.4 for CDM+ 8.1.2).

Regardless of the operating system, server and client machines should have at least 512 MB of RAM and 200 MB of disk space plus free space for data. If you are running CDM+ 8.1 or later on just one machine, that computer is both the data server and client.
